PROSPECTS:
It is estimated that Pennington County
had a minimum production through 1959
of about
128,000 ounces of gold. Gold was found
in 1875 in the gravels of Spring Creek,
Palmer Gulch, Castle Creek, and Rapid
Creek.
The gorgeous Spring Creek runs
through the beautiful meadow in the
background of the typical Black Hills‘
timber woods. The creek travels along
the nice gravel road so that you have a
very easy access to the stream pretty
much from anywhere. Within this claim,
the creek bends in a S sharp, which
provides excellent mining opportunities;
Without mentioning, the inner curve bars
are excellent “gold trapping” zone. You
can approach those areas with various
mining methods, such as, a dredging,
high-banking, sluicing, panning , etc,.
Keep in mind you need to acquire a
permit for certain mining, such as a
dredging or high-banking from the
National Forest. You don’t need any
permit for a panning, gold detecting or
sluicing.The riffles and rapids are
excellent for sluicing or dredging. The
shallow pools give a beginner or your
family members excellent opportunity for
experiencing hand mining methods,
such as panning. Please prepare
yourself a pair of wade boots to walk
across the filed or mine in the stream.
We’ve noticed some areas in the field
are very wet, and also water in the
stream is very cold in early or late
spring. Wade booths allow you to stay in
the stream for a long time.
Even though this claims is excellent for
serious miners, it is a very nice quiet,
peaceful and secluded area where one
could just relax and enjoy surrounding
nature, or beginners could get started in
a mining environment that is not too
difficult. Definitely it is a good place
where you could take your family or love
one with. Your family could enjoy
panning all day.
Keep in mind that it is generally very
hard to reserve a public or private
campsite in Custer State Park area
during busy seasons, such as Memorial
weekend or 4th July weekend unless
you book several months in advance.
Please reserve your campsite or hotel
room early in advance. We recommend
Flinstones campground in Custer with
good facility. It seems like sites are
always available with short notice. In
addition, it is located the edge of Custer
town, and everything you need (grocery,
hardware, gas stations, etc,.) within
several blocks.
