PROSPECTS:
It is estimated that Pennington County
had a minimum production through
1959 of about 128,000 ounces of
gold. Gold was found in 1875 in the
gravels of Spring Creek, Palmer
Gulch, Castle Creek, and Rapid
Creek.
Shadow Creek property is
characterized with shallow and
relatively easy to mine. You find
river bends, riffles, short-pools and
rapids, which are excellent for mining
This claim is an exceptionally nice
mining property for a gold prospector
who prefers to work in shallow to
medium depth of water with an easy
access. It is good for 2 to 4 inches
suction dredges or portable
high-banker-dredge combinations. It
is also good for a panning, though
you may have to wear wade boots.
Sluicing is another
good method you can approach in the
riffles area.
Note*: You are required to have a permit to do a
dredging or high-banking in South Dakota.
Even though this claim (lots) are
excellent for serious miners, it is a
very nice quiet, peaceful area where
one could just relax and enjoy South
Dakota nature. Definitely it is a good
place where you could take your
family or love one with.
Keep in mind that it is generally very
hard to reserve a public or private
campsite in Custer State Park area
during busy seasons, such as
Memorial weekend or 4th July
weekend unless you book several
months in advance. Please reserve
your campsite or hotel room very
early in advance. We recommend
Flintstones campground in Custer
with good facility; restroom, shower,
utilities, and plus, swimming pool, mini
golf for your children. It seems like
sites (RV, Tent or cabin) are always
available with shorter notice
reservation. The Flintstone
campground is located in the end of
Custer town. Every store is within
walking distance.
