Montana. Unlike California or Oregon, Montana covers so many remote areas where no
one has ever staked nor ever mined. Here we are offering gold-rich placer claims in
Stillwater County.
Stillwater Complex
Stillwater County has a rich mining history. There has been exploration and mining
activity in its southern portion of the county since 1870. Most of the mining centered
around the upper Stillwater Valley, above Nye, in a highly mineralized area, 28 miles
long and 3 miles wide, named the Stillwater Complex. Nye City was built in the 1880's
as the base for a gold mining operation in the area. During this decade the town
boomed to a population of 500, but by 1890, Nye City was virtually a ghost town.
Recently this area, called Stillwater Complex, has been more famous for platinum,
palladium and, of course, gold. Famous Stillwater Mining Company has a huge mining
operation right in Nye, Stillwater County.
The Stillwater igneous complex is a large layered intrusion located southern Montana in
Stillwater. The complex is exposed across 30 miles of the north flank of the Beartooth
Mountain range. The complex has also extensive reserves of chromium ore and has a
history of chromium production.
